Mass. finalizes $1.4B for water infrastructure projects

State regulators this week finalized $1.4 billion in loans and grants to finance 168 water and wastewater infrastructure projects, including efforts to address PFAS contamination, elevated lead levels in drinking water, and failed septic systems.
The funding supports 49 clean water construction projects valued at $932 million and 50 drinking water projects worth $503 million. An additional $8 million will be offered as grants for 69 asset management planning projects.
The awards include 20 projects that zero in on a big cost center in municipal energy use.
Communities across the state spend about $150 million each year on electricity to treat wastewater and drinking water, and 20 funded water infrastructure projects aim to weave renewable energy and energy efficiency into those efforts to cut down on treatment-related energy costs.
