Birmingham’s historic summer rainfall is prompting comparisons to California’s wildfires and setting priorities for sewer maintenance work.
Commissioner Clinton Baller said this summer’s rain events are, like the wildfires, an indication of global warming and climate change that will only intensify.
“It’s not so much, for me, about how much rain fell,” he said. “It’s what do I and my fellow residents do and what are you going to do to mitigate this? As you design new sewers, does that mean you design them bigger? Speaking of new sewers… there was flooding on streets that had just recently had sewers installed. What is that all about?
