Leaders from area towns discuss cyber attack on water infrastructure systems
Feb 2, 2024
A few area small communities were recently victims of hackers who got into their water infrastructure systems.
The issue was addressed Wednesday afternoon (just less than two weeks after the hack) during a "Small Towns Meeting" that brought together city managers and public works directors from communities throughout the region.
The hack was noted on Jan. 18. Ramon Sanchez, Muleshoe City Manager, said the hack was discovered after a citizen called in some unusual activity - an overflowing water tank. Sanchez said the city looked into it and discovered a system malfunction that was relatively out of control of the city staff. It did not cause any service disruptions.
