MAUMEE, Ohio — New water and sewer rates for Maumee residents and businesses took effect on Sunday.
The rates will rise nearly 64% in scheduled increments until Jan. 1, 2025.
City officials say the rate increase is necessary to offset costs due to a 2019 water agreement with the City of Toledo.
The increase in sewer rates are due to Environmental Protection Agency mandated maintenance and upgrades along with the replacement of the city's sewer system infrastructure.
City officials say these improvements will take nearly 30 years to complete at a cost of more than $100 million and paying a nearly $30,000 fine to the Ohio EPA.
