Nashville considers water rate hike to fix aging infrastructure
Nov 13, 2019
While the cost for Nashville to operate its water and sewer systems has gone up 30% in the past decade, rates have not changed since 2011.
That's likely to change starting next year.
Nashville is considering a multi-year rate hike at the urging of Metro Water Services and the state — which has put the city on an "end-of-year notice" to raise rates — setting the stage for an increase by January.
The state has grown increasingly concerned about the city's finances and its "financially distressed" water department. Without a rate increase in nearly a decade, Metro's ability to pay for its aging infrastructure and cover its operations has been on a steady decline.
