Officials concerned climate change is threatening wastewater treatment plant in Saco
SACO (WGME) – There is concern that climate change is threatening the wastewater treatment plant in Saco.
The wastewater treatment plant sits on the banks of the Saco River, leaving it vulnerable to flooding brought on by climate change.
“Failure is not an option,” Saco Water Resource Recovery Department Director Howard Carter said. “We have a responsibility to our residents and business owners.”
Water from heavy rain, high tides and melting snow is flowing into Saco’s wastewater facility.
“That is happening more and more frequently than we would like to see,” Carter said.
