Daphne Utilities: ''Please don't flush wipes''
DAPHNE, Ala. (WPMI) — Heavy rain is not the only cause for many of the sewage overflows in South Alabama. Flushable wipes are contributing big time to clogging up sewage pumps and pipes.
“Please do not flush these wipes, because they are harmful for our system,” Samantha Coppels, Communications Manager for Daphne Utilities said.
She said the wipes may flush down when you turn the knob on your toilet. But they are not breaking down in the system like toilet paper. It’s creating a big mess and it’s resulting in sewage overflows which spill into rivers and creeks.
Daphne Utilities has seen a spike in the amount of wipes flow through its system since the pandemic started. Luckily just before the pandemic baskets were installed inside lift stations to catch wipes. It’s a dirty job crews must check daily.
