Survey Highlights Trends for Water Sector Cybersecurity

Jun 17, 2021

A report summarizing the results of the recent utility cybersecurity survey sponsored by NACWA and the other water sector associations in now available. The survey revealed that many utilities are taking the necessary steps to protect their information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) systems, incorporating cybersecurity into risk management plans and protecting IT and OT assets but that there is not consistency across-the-board in planning. Many utilities still face challenges in taking needed actions to enhance their ability to protect against and mitigate cyber-threats.

Respondents identified several areas where the federal government can support the water sector in advancing cybersecurity best practices that build on current activities. The top four categories are:

  • Training and education specific to the water sector;
  • Technical assistance, assessments, and tools;
  • Cybersecurity threat information; and
  • Federal loans and grants.

NACWA and the other water sector associations will use the survey results to assist with improving awareness and strategies that utility leaders can take to enhance cybersecurity while also targeting its advocacy for potential federal action to support utility cybersecurity efforts.

Please contact Cynthia Finley, NACWA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, with any questions about cybersecurity or the survey results.
