ARLINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WJLA) — Arlington County leaders are warning people to keep their pets away from 4 Mile Run for 24 to 48 hours following a sewage leak.

The leak started around noon on Sunday.

The Department of Environmental Services believes the overflow was likely caused by people who put things down the drain or in the toilet they should not.

County officials urge residents not to flush any wipes - even the so-called 'flushable' wipes - and not to put fats, oils and grease down the drains.

“In the past year, we had about four of these breaks in Arlington County,” said Aileen Winquist, Watershed Outreach Programs Manager for Arlington’s Department of Environmental Services. “That is a source of bacteria and nutrient waste to the environment, so it’s not good obviously for the water quality, for the organisms in the stream.”
