FBI Leads Drone Discussion with NACWA Security & Emergency Preparedness Committee

(October 9, 2019) –The NACWA Security & Emergency Preparedness Committee held a web meeting on October 1 to discuss issues with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones. 

FBI Special Agent Brian Schmitt provided information on how drones are operated and regulated, as well as case studies of drones that have caused security concerns or have been used for nefarious purposes.  Special Agent Schmitt reviewed the procedures that utilities should use for reporting any suspicious or dangerous drone activity.  Scott Ast, District Security Officer for NACWA member utility the Denver Metro Wastewater Reclamation District, also shared the experiences of his utility with drones.
