'Flushable' wipes causing sewage nightmares for utility workers
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (WSET) -- Those flushable wipes that you're using at home could be a serious issue for your area's waste system, as one Colorado crew found out.
There's a standard maintenance to clear pipes of fat, oil, and grease, which workers call FOG.
FOG can clog pipes, especially when things like bacon grease are poured down the drain, because it solidifies and clings to things like flushable wipes.
Apparently, they really aren't flushable.
"That is what it says, but it is not. It's causes a huge problem," Nick Verdi, the operation and waste water supervisor for Colorado Springs Utilities, told KKTV.
