NACWA Weighs in on Materials Preference Legislation
NACWA signed onto a letter July 5, with a broad coalition of water and engineering organizations, to raise concerns about federal “materials preference” legislation for water and wastewater projects. Due to a perceived lack of competitiveness in the pipe marketplace, there have been ongoing efforts at the state and national levels that could in effect, legislate technical decisions around the use of specific pipe materials – potentially opening up municipal entities to legal action over decisions made in the materials selection process.
NACWA does not support one type of pipe material over another, but believes that the selection of which materials to use should be left to local utility professionals and their consultants, who best understand local needs and engineering specifications.
