Green spaces play supporting role in healthier communities

By this time next month, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) officials will have their hands on the latest crop of grant applications from dozens of nonprofits, churches, municipalities and businesses interested in “greening” their properties and creating more resilient and healthier communities for all.
Jennifer Elting, business strategy program manager for the district, said that since 2014, NEORSD has provided nearly $13 million for 71 grantee-led “green infrastructure” projects – each of which aims to reduce water pollution by slowing and/or cleansing storm runoff that might otherwise make it into waterways carrying a soupy mix of litter, fertilizers, bacteria, motor oil and numerous other toxins.
