Uhl: Don’t Flush “Flushable” Wipes

Sheldon, Iowa — Flushable wipes — aren’t. Flushable, that is. That from Sheldon Public Works Superintendent Todd Uhl.

Uhl tells us the city sewer crews have been having to deal with the aftermath of wipes being flushed down the toilet, and it’s not pretty.

Uhl says while they see all kinds of wipes from baby wipes to Clorox wipes end up in the sewer, he says one kind of wipe gives the wrong impression, as the word “flushable” is right on the label. He says sure, they’re flushable in that they’ll go down the toilet — but they’re going to cause someone to have to do some extra work and could threaten to do damage to infrastructure.

Uhl says human waste and toilet paper are the only things that should be flushed down a toilet. He also reminds people not to pour grease of any kind down the drain. He says this will congeal and can cause backups as well.
