EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Lower Valley Water District is asking residents to avoid flushing sanitary wipes because, contrary to some packaging claims, they are not biodegradable.

The following items should not be flushed down sewer lines:

  • Sanitary wipes /Wet wipes /baby wipes
  • Face Masks
  • Gloves
  • Diapers
  • Paper towels
  • Napkins
  • Facial tissues

As customers continue to address COVID-19 issues, large quantities of sanitary wipes, personal face masks, alternatives to toilet paper and even clothes are being flushed into sewer lines.

While the sanitary wipes have traditionally been a constant concern to managing wastewater facilities and as customers combat the COVID-19 pandemic there continues to be an exponential increase in dredging up these items from sewer systems.
