Dearborn Heights officials are warning residents against using “flushable” sanitary wipes, saying they’re instead just flushing money down the drain.

According to a release from the city, the wipes are not biodegradable and often get caught in bends in the pipes, or if there is any debris in the drains, this then causes backups, blockages and in extreme cases, pipes to burst.

“It’s wreaking havoc throughout our sanitary collection system,” the city said in a statement.

The increasingly-popular cleansing wipes, used for a multitude of cleaning and hygienic purposes, are proving not to decompose as they are flushed away in toilets as they continue to find their way into municipal sewer systems – resulting in serious and expensive problems for municipalities, homeowners and business owners.
