A flood of aid: Panama City getting $4.7 million to fight heavy rain and storm surge

PANAMA CITY — Panama City is set to get $4.7 million in federal aid to strengthen its infrastructure against flooding from heavy rainfall and storm surges.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency approved the money through its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program in response to a proposal from the city following Hurricane Michael in 2018. The approval comes after some streets were flooded and parts of the wastewater infrastructure in the city was overwhelmed by heavy rain from storms in recent weeks.
The city will receive about $2.65 million for the Millville Wastewater Treatment Plant, specifically for the purchase and installation of twin permanent generators to support critical operations at the facility. The generators will be connected to the main electrical transfer system by a switchgear and an underground duct bank, which will provide a protected pathway for electrical transmission and allow the city to provide continued service to the community during power outages.
