Environmental groups urge Virginia to use federal funds to clean Chesapeake Bay

Virginia should use about one-sixth of funds due from the new American Rescue Plan to step up the pace of efforts to clean the Chesapeake Bay, an alliance of environmental groups says.

The six groups this week asked the chairs of the General Assembly’s budget-writing money committees to set aside just over $680 million of the $4.3 billion Virginia expects to get from the plan to fund work on wastewater, sewer and stormwater systems — all major sources of pollutants.

The General Assembly meets next month to decide what to do with the American Rescue Plan funds.

The environmental groups propose setting $200 million to pay for more of the new pollution controls for wastewater plants that the General Assembly ordered this year, while declining to fund all of the expected work.
