Some people in the community are still struggling financially as Evansville reopens, but the efforts of a local non-profit are giving people a chance.

It’s a collaborative effort between the Community Action Program of Evansville and Evansville Water and Sewer Utility called the Water Bill Assistance Program.

The program aims to help those who are behind on their water bill and are facing a water shut off.

Applicants must provide proof of income and other documents to receive assistance. If accepted, applicants can receive up to $250 towards their water payments each year.

Since the program started in 2017, over $200,000 have gone to Evansville Water and Sewer Utility customers in need.

Ella Johnson-Watson with EWSU told 44News, “A lot of people are struggling, you know. Things are re-opening but not everybody is back to where they used to be… We want to do what we can to help customers.”
