LAWTON, Okla. (TNN) - The City of Lawton is warning residents against flushing “flushable” wipes.

The City’s Wastewater Collection Division sent a memo explaining how damaging the wipes are to Lawton’s sewer system.

The memo says that out of 306 debris related sewer calls the Wastewater Collection Division responded to between March 2020 and March 2021, about 75% of those were due to blockages from the non-biodegradable wipes.

That’s a total of 229 calls.

Officials say the wipes have cost taxpayers more than $137,000 in call runs, maintenance, and cleanup jobs in the past year alone.
