OSWEGO — Port City councilors this week approved a more than $600,000 improvement to the city’s Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant, continuing a multi-year effort to upgrade the facilities in conjunction with the federally-mandated sewer separation work.

The Oswego Common Council unanimously approved a $606,000 contract with Oswego-based J&A Mechanical Contractors, which submitted the low bid for the so-called Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant Rehabilitation of Hydronic Systems Project. The latest wastewater plant improvements include an updated heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system and complement a variety of other upgrades made to the city’s water and wastewater infrastructure in recent years.

Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow said the HVAC project and other work at the city’s facilities is part of a capital plan officials have been following “to make up for years of deferred maintenance” and to upgrade infrastructure. Barlow said the piping for the hot water heating system in the plant currently dates back to 1972 and is in “very bad shape,” with significant corrosion, leaking and scaling.
