EDISON - An $811 million, 40-year deal with Suez North America to repair, maintain and operate the township’s water delivery and wastewater systems has come under intense scrutiny since the deal was announced in February.

It’s led to a petition for a referendum that, according to state law, requires 4,000 signatures to be considered for the ballot. Within its first week of circulation, the petition has collected about 1,000 signatures, according to organizers.

Drafted in the wake of reports of high lead levels in Suez-owned pipes in Bergen and Hudson counties, among other concerns, the referendum asks residents if they want the township to enact repairs to its crumbling water and wastewater sewers at a cost of a half billion dollars, rather than deal with Hackensack-based Suez.
