State and county officials hinted at findings of a recently completed study about regional sewer service on Virginia's Eastern Shore, despite the results not yet being made public.

The comments came during an April 23 panel discussion about local issues, sponsored by the Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce in Eastville.

Spencer Murray, Northampton County Board of Supervisors chairman, said developing wastewater infrastructure is key to filling other needs on the Shore, including the need in Northampton for affordable and workforce housing.

"Every little town, every time you do workforce housing, you can't build a mass drainfield. You need infrastructure — you need wastewater treatment; you need water ... Every town cannot have its own sewer system," he said.

Of towns with municipal systems, Exmore and Nassawadox "already are struggling with the capacity that they have," Murray said.
