While U.S. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez flubbed by naming the wrong disease in making a statement about poor sanitary conditions in parts of Alabama, there are very real concerns about the lack of proper sewage facilities in one of the poorest counties in Alabama.

Ocasio-Cortez said ringworm when she meant hookworm, an intestinal parasite that, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, was common throughout the Southeast until the early 20th century, but became much rarer due to improved sanitary conditions.
