The system tested this week at the Coldwater wastewater treatment plant looks space age, and is — using algae to clean the sewer effluent to improve drinking water quality.
The resulting algae can then be turned into insoles found in running shoes.
Coldwater Board of Pubic Utilities brought in a mobile demonstration unit from Clearas, the company that developed the process and is now installing full-sized systems in Utah and Wisconsin.
“While wastewater is not an exciting topic, it will become a serious issue as the city will need to decide how best to expand our treatment facilities for future generations,” said CBPU Manager Jeff Budd. “Our current technology is still based on 1950 and 1960 ideas.”
